It is a tangible reminder of the role of public rail service in the growth of Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach and the suburbs between them. Its setting still keeps a rural character, and the community drove its restoration.","narrative":"Sixty feet west of the corner of Park Avenue and Audubon Boulevard in Wilmington stands a small trolley shelter built in 1911 for the Tidewater Power Company. Its reinforced concrete walls radiate from a center in a Greek cross plan beneath a pyramidal roof of green-glazed terra cotta tile, with wooden bench seats set into the walls. It served the Audubon suburb, developed by Hugh MacRae along the eleven-mile line to Wrightsville Beach. Trolley service ended in 1940, the rails were removed, and the other twenty stations along the route disappeared. The shelter decayed and lost its roof and wooden parts. A new roof in 1985 was inaccurate. After original tile fragments were found in 1990, matching tiles were obtained and a correct roof was installed in 1992. It is the only surviving station on the line and keeps a quiet, residential setting beside the old right-of-way.","period_of_significance":"1911-1940","architect_builder":"Tidewater Power Co.","architectural_style":"Mission/Spanish Colonial Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Restored in 1992 with a reconstructed terra cotta tile roof; the site now serves as a small landscaped plaza on city-owned land.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.679816-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/68/7215/47721568/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/93000736.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000736/331863f79a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000736/331863f79a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Audubon_Trolley_Station_(Wilmington,_NC).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Audubon_Trolley_Station_(Wilmington,_NC).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721568","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audubon_Trolley_Station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19460313"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/new-hanover-county/audubon-trolley-station-93000736/"}
