Under Criterion C it is presented as a good example of a flat-roofed Second Italian Renaissance Revival building, with rusticated limestone lower floors, brick upper floors, belt courses and classical door detailing.","narrative":"Rising eight stories at 65 South Fourth Street in downtown Columbus, this Second Italian Renaissance Revival building was dedicated on January 13, 1929, as the home of the Young Women's Christian Association. It was funded by a bequest of more than $400,000 from Mary J. Griswold and named in memory of her husband, Charles C. Griswold. The first two stories are limestone and the upper six are brick, with belt courses, a bracketed cornice and a classical doorway with a broken pediment. Inside were a gymnasium, chapel, ballroom, swimming pool, bowling alleys and residential floors. The building matters for what the YWCA did there. It provided housing, fitness, and business training for women, and ran a Leisure Time School during the Depression. Its Industrial Women's Clubs lobbied on workplace conditions, and it hosted wartime USO services and meetings of varied political groups. Renovations in 1963-4 and 1984 left its character largely intact.","period_of_significance":"1929-1943","architect_builder":"Miller & Reeves","architectural_style":"Italian Renaissance (Second Italian Renaissance Revival)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, renovated in 1963-4 and 1984, with offices, educational and recreational space on the lower floors and residential floors above.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.365873-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/93000671.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000671/0f079173fc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000671/0f079173fc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.0","author":"Ohio Redevelopment Projects - ODSA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Columbus-Griswold_Memorial_YMCA_(OHPTC)_-_15951363788.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ohio Redevelopment Projects - ODSA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Columbus-Griswold_Memorial_YMCA_(OHPTC)_-_15951363788.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988623","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griswold_Memorial_Young_Women%27s_Christian_Association","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q104881803"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/franklin-county/griswold-memorial-young-womens-christian-association-93000671/"}
