It is one of only two cobblestone buildings in Cortland County and one of 21 surviving cobblestone churches in the state. Its 1890s interior renovation retains a high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1837 at 3 Church Street in Cortland, this two-story cobblestone church combines late Federal and early Greek Revival design. Its gabled front has a pediment, a molded cornice and a two-tiered bell tower with corner pilasters, and shale quoins and window trim set off the greyish brown cobbles. The front wall uses small, smooth stones in herringbone and diamond patterns, while the side walls are simpler. Cobblestone buildings are rare this far south and east in New York; this is one of two in Cortland County and one of 21 surviving cobblestone churches in the state. Local members donated labor and farmers brought the stones. Benjamin Davis and Horace Bliss built it, and the basement served as a town hall from 1838 to 1883. An 1890s renovation added an entrance porch, stained-glass windows, Canadian ash ceiling panels, sloped Akron-plan seating and a pipe organ by Morey and Barnes of Utica.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1837 - ca. 1900","architect_builder":"Benjamin Davis; Horace Bliss","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal; Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historic and current function are both religious facility; the form lists the interior and 1890s features as retaining a high degree of integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.080247-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/93000592.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000592/8512b4e097-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000592/8512b4e097-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Unitarian_Universalist_Church_Cortland_NY_Aug_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Unitarian_Universalist_Church_Cortland_NY_Aug_09.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312439","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unitarian_Universalist_Church_(Cortland,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7887211"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cortland-county/unitarian-universalist-church-93000592/"}
