Built in 1818 with a larger main block added in 1830, it was moved in 1982 from Marion, Wayne County.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be a distinctive example of late Federal style residential architecture in western New York, with largely intact original interior fabric. It is also associated with Thomas Youngs, a prosperous farmer and miller whose wealth grew with the Erie Canal, and with abolitionist activity and a possible Underground Railroad station.","narrative":"Set on a nine-acre semi-rural lot in Pittsford, this Federal style house began in 1818 as a one and one-half story frame dwelling built by early settler Thomas Youngs in Marion, Wayne County. In 1830 Youngs, enriched by farming and milling after the Erie Canal opened, added an elegant two and one-half story main block. It keeps its symmetrical facade, twelve-over-twelve windows, leaded sidelights and transom, a bracketed stair, and finely molded fireplace surrounds. Highway widening damaged its original setting, so the house was cut into sections, moved to Mitchell Road in 1982, and reassembled with its original parts returned to their places. A 1950s fire-damaged wing was restored the same year. The house is valued as a refined example of late Federal architecture in western New York. It is also linked to the abolitionist beliefs of Youngs and his Quaker wife, Phoebe, and may have sheltered escaping slaves.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Thomas Youngs (original owner/builder); two skilled carpenters hired in 1830 (unnamed)","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling; moved to its present site in 1982 and restored in 1982-83.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.757953-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/93000546.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000546/7ba8f9e8ff-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000546/7ba8f9e8ff-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tim Pierce","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomas_Youngs_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Pierce</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomas_Youngs_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318981","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Youngs_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7795385"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/youngs-thomas-house-93000546/"}
