It is also a representative example of the industrial work of Utica architect Frederick H. Gouge. As the only surviving clothing factory in Bagg's Square East, it reflects the area's early twentieth-century industrial growth.","narrative":"Occupying the west side of First Street between Main and Broad streets in Utica, this four-story brick complex began as a ready-made clothing factory. It was built in three phases: the Main Street section in 1881, a middle addition in the 1880s-90s, and the Broad Street section in 1901. The structure has load-bearing brick walls, heavy timber framing, a flat roof and limestone foundations. The Broad Street facades recall Chicago School commercial design, with cast-stone Tuscan columns at the entrance. Inside, exposed brick, wood floors, original stairwells, office partitions and a water-powered elevator mechanism survive. Clothing was made here until the early 1930s, and later the building served as a hardware storage and distribution site. It was listed for its link to Utica's textile and clothing industry and its role in Bagg's Square's industrial growth, and as the work of local architect Frederick H. Gouge. It is currently vacant.","period_of_significance":"1881-1934","architect_builder":"Gouge, Frederick H.
