It is a Late Victorian building with restrained Gothic-inspired motifs.","why_significant":"The church is significant for architecture as a representative example of late-nineteenth-century rural church design, with an intact Akron Plan interior. It is also the largest, most prominent and most intact survivor of the once-thriving hamlet of Ellis Hollow. The architect and builder are unknown.","narrative":"Built in 1896, this small white clapboard church serves the hamlet of Ellis Hollow in the town of Dryden, Tompkins County. The frame building measures 30 by 46 feet and has a steep roof, a corner tower holding the main entrance, and pointed-arched windows with patterned and stained glass. Inside, it follows the Akron Plan, in which pews radiate diagonally from a corner entrance toward a pulpit in the opposite corner, and sliding wooden doors open the sanctuary to an adjoining Sunday school room. Chestnut wainscot, embossed metal panels and original iron light fixtures survive. The land and $1,000 toward construction were donated by Ann Smith, a daughter of Peleg Ellis, and the church was dedicated as a memorial to her daughter Carrie R. Smith. Farmers did much of the work. In 1964 the building was moved onto a new concrete block foundation after the stone one failed. Few other traces of the hamlet's former mills and shops remain, so the church is its most prominent surviving landmark.","period_of_significance":"1896","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian","criteria":["A","B"],"status_note":"The church continues to operate on a limited basis; the 1964 foundation replacement is its only substantial alteration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.379645-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/93000443.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000443/c94085b1c0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000443/c94085b1c0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ELLIS_METHODIST_EPISCOPAL_CHURCH,_TOMPKINS_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322493","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellis_Methodist_Episcopal_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5365948"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/tompkins-county/ellis-methodist-episcopal-church-93000443/"}
