It centers on a stone house built about 1834, greatly enlarged between 1903 and 1913, with 16 contributing resources including barns and outbuildings.","why_significant":"It is significant under Criterion B as the longtime country home of Cleveland industrialists Daniel Pomeroy Rhodes and his grandson Daniel Rhodes Hanna, leaders in the coal and iron ore trade. Under Criterion C, the 1834 house is a rare Ohio example of Jeffersonian Classicism, and the estate preserves nearly intact an early twentieth-century industrialist's country estate and model farm.","narrative":"Cottage Hill Farm is a 65-acre hilltop estate about two miles east of Ravenna, Ohio, built around a stone house of 1834. Merchant Edmund B. Bostwick had it built in the Jeffersonian style, and the architect remains unknown. The property later passed to the Rhodes family and then, in 1895, to Daniel Rhodes Hanna, a Cleveland coal and iron-ore executive and newspaper publisher. Between 1903 and 1913 the house was enlarged to 39 rooms with a stone wing and a large Jacobethan addition. Hanna also built a working model farm, and cattle, horse and bull barns, an ice house, granary, corncrib, kennel and an 80-foot water tower survive, along with rubble stone entrance walls and wrought-iron gates. The estate is recognized for its association with the Rhodes and Hanna families, who helped develop Cleveland's coal and iron-ore trade, and for the rare 1834 house and the largely intact early twentieth-century estate landscape.","period_of_significance":"1834-1913","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Early Classical Revival; Tudor Revival (Jeffersonian original block with Jacobethan addition)","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"The estate remains a single dwelling with agricultural outbuildings. Some outbuildings are ruins, and others have been lost to demolition or fire. The house was used as a dude ranch from 1959.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:06.924018-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/93000401.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990999","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/portage-county/cottage-hill-farm-93000401/"}
