Its site plan and Romanesque Revival buildings represent turn-of-the-century American brewery architecture (Criterion C).","narrative":"This former brewery occupies the southeast corner of Folsom and 11th Streets in San Francisco's South of Market area. Six surviving buildings form an L-shaped plan arranged around the three main stages of beer making: malting, brewing and bottling. Construction began in 1905-06, the plant was damaged by the 1906 earthquake and fire, and most of it was rebuilt in 1912. The corner brew house at 1489 Folsom Street is a five-story brick building with a tower and is the strongest example of the Romanesque Revival style on the site. Other buildings are plainer brick or corrugated-iron-clad structures. The Jackson Brewing Company dates to about 1858-59 and later passed to German immigrant owners. Prohibition ended its beer production, and it did not reopen after Repeal. The complex was recognized for its link to San Francisco's brewing industry and for its typical brewery design. It was also designated a San Francisco City Landmark in 1991.","period_of_significance":"1905/1906 - 1920","architect_builder":"Ludlow, James T.
