It also includes sheds, a water tower, passenger sheds, tracks and an underpass.","why_significant":"The depot is argued to be significant under Criterion C in architecture as a late example of the Italian Renaissance Revival style in commercial architecture in California. It is one of only four transportation facilities in that style in the state and the last grand-scale depot built in northern California. It retains a high level of integrity.","narrative":"Southern Pacific's Cahill Street station in San Jose is a railroad complex built around a 1935 combination passenger and freight depot. The brick building has a three-story center flanked by two-story wings, a terra cotta tile roof, and three tall arches on its main facade. Inside, the waiting room has terrazzo floors, a coffered ceiling and a mural by John MacQuarrie depicting the colonization of the Santa Clara Valley. Designed by Southern Pacific architect John H. Christie, it replaced the 1872 Market Street station and ended a 30-year effort to move the main line away from downtown traffic. The district also includes the 1933 underpass, a water tower, butterfly passenger sheds, tracks and three small utilitarian sheds. Its listing rests on architecture: it is a late example of Italian Renaissance Revival design, mixed with Streamline Moderne touches, and one of only four such transportation buildings in California. It remains largely unaltered and still serves travelers.","period_of_significance":"1932-1935","architect_builder":"Christie, John H.; Morrison, E.C. (depot built by the C.N. It continues to serve its original purpose as a railroad depot.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.859133-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/93000274.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000274/8d9a1f45dc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000274/8d9a1f45dc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pi.1415926535","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:San_Jose_Diridon_station,_November_2019.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pi.1415926535</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:San_Jose_Diridon_station,_November_2019.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861793","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Jose_Diridon_station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3096377"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/santa-clara-county/southern-pacific-depot-93000274/"}
