It is Wharton's most cohesive historic residential area and holds its largest concentration of bungalows. The houses reflect a period of economic growth and the building of affordable middle-class housing.","narrative":"Linn Street Historic District is a compact residential neighborhood of about six acres north of downtown Wharton. It contains 17 contributing and 6 noncontributing resources, mostly one and one-and-a-half-story houses with garages and other outbuildings, all built between 1911 and 1942. Bungalows dominate, with gabled roofs, broad porches on columns set on brick piers, brackets and half-timbered detailing. A Tudor Revival house, a Colonial Revival house and an eclectic pyramid-roof house add variety. Local contractors J.C. Jopling and J.T. Williams built at least one of the houses. The district reflects a period of economic growth in early 20th-century Wharton, when modest, affordable housing was built for a growing middle class of merchants and professionals. Many bungalows elsewhere in town have lost their original character through alteration, so this group is unusual in retaining integrity. It was recognized for its architecture as the city's largest cohesive collection of early 20th-century homes.","period_of_significance":"1911-1942","architect_builder":"Jopling, J.C.; Williams, J.T.","architectural_style":"Bungalow; Tudor Revival; Colonial Revival; Pyramid-Roof House","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Houses are in use as single dwellings, with one specialty store; the form describes buildings as well preserved and maintained, with most virtually unaltered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:24.203397-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/12/9707/40970712/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/93000124.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970712","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q109999765"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/wharton-county/linn-street-historic-district-93000124/"}
