It was built around 1895 for planter Burr Albert Harrison and has three contributing outbuildings.","why_significant":"The house is tied to J.H.H. Dennis, Wharton's first mayor, a county judge and county attorney, who lived there from 1913 to 1959. It is the only surviving property associated with him. It is also one of the two best preserved late 19th century residences in the city and a fine example of the two-story L-plan form.","narrative":"Built around 1895 at 409 West Burleson Street in Wharton, this two-story frame house follows an L-plan. It sits on a brick pier-and-beam foundation under a hipped asphalt-shingle roof, with weatherboard siding, three interior brick chimneys and wooden double-hung windows. A two-story porch with turned columns, jig-sawn brackets and leaded-glass doors wraps the north facade, and a hexagonal bay rises to a tower roof at the northwest corner. A garage, carriage shed and utility shed stand behind it. The house was probably built for planter Burr Albert Harrison, though he is not known to have lived there. J.H.H. Dennis bought it in 1913 and lived there until 1959. Dennis served in the state legislature, as Wharton's first mayor and as county attorney, and the house is the only surviving property linked to him. It is also valued as one of the best preserved late 19th century homes in the city.","period_of_significance":"1913-1942, ca. 1895","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"OTHER: L-plan House","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling, with high integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:24.029079-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/60/9707/40970760/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/93000110.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000110/c735ab6551-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000110/c735ab6551-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harrison-Dennis_House,_Wharton,_TX.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harrison-Dennis_House,_Wharton,_TX.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970760","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002544"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/wharton-county/harrison-dennis-house-93000110/"}
