It is also significant as a late 19th century dwelling adapted and updated in the early 20th century while keeping its vernacular character. It is described as one of three premier examples of the upscaled pyramid-roof form in Wharton.","narrative":"Facing east on Richmond Road in Wharton, this two-story house combines two periods of construction under one large pyramidal roof. The upper story, clad in weatherboard with 6/6 windows, dates to about 1875. Around 1910 the original building was raised about twelve feet on railroad ties and jacks, and a new brick first floor with round-headed multi-light windows and arches was built beneath it. A two-story porch with Classical Revival columns and a balustrade spans the front. Joseph Andrew Hamilton bought the house and eight acres in 1885 and later served as County Clerk, District Clerk, Tax Assessor and Collector, Justice of the Peace and School Board president. He is believed to have hired a Houston architect named Green in 1907 to enlarge it for his growing family. The house was listed for architecture as an unusually upscale example of the pyramid-roof house type, with both building phases clearly visible on the front facade.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1875, ca. 1910, ca. 1925","architect_builder":"Unknown (a Houston architect named \"Green\" is believed to have been hired in 1907)","architectural_style":"Other: Pyramid-roof House","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling and remains in the Hamilton family; the form says it retains a high degree of integrity despite some alterations and additions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.321874-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/38/9707/40970738/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/93000106.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000106/3a99ed180c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000106/3a99ed180c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_Andrew_Hamilton_House,_Wharton,_TX.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_Andrew_Hamilton_House,_Wharton,_TX.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970738","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002547"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/wharton-county/hamilton-joseph-andrew-house-93000106/"}
