It retains a high degree of integrity with virtually no alterations. It is one of only two brick churches in Wharton at least 50 years old.","narrative":"This brick church at 612 North Pecan Street in Wharton, Texas, faces west on a corner lot in a largely residential neighborhood. Built in 1929 and dedicated in March 1930, it serves a Missouri Synod Lutheran congregation that bought the lot in 1924 for $200 and first worshipped in a temporary building. A circuit-riding minister then served the group, along with congregations in several nearby towns. The one-story rectangular building has an open nave, a gable roof with capped parapets, stepped corner buttresses, arched art glass windows and a three-story crenelated tower on the northwest corner. These features mark it as a fine example of Late Gothic Revival design. It was listed for its architecture, with local significance. It is one of only two brick churches in Wharton at least 50 years old, and it has seen virtually no alterations. The congregation still uses it today.","period_of_significance":"1929","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still serves the congregation as a religious facility; retains a high degree of integrity with virtually no alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.012002-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/22/9707/40970722/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/93000100.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000100/01a1ea083a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000100/01a1ea083a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 4.0","author":"Larry D.
