Garrett, with a contributing frame garage.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an excellent example of the vernacular center-passage house type and the finest one-story example of that form in Wharton. It is described as a locally rare subtype of domestic architecture that retains its integrity. It is listed under Criterion C in architecture within the context of community development in Wharton, 1875-1942.","narrative":"This one-story frame house at 504 North Fulton Street in Wharton, Texas, was built around 1905 and follows a center-passage plan. It rests on brick piers under a side-gabled asphalt-shingle roof. Drop siding covers the main block, and a rear ell added about 1930 is clad in board-and-batten. A full-width hipped porch with turned columns, jig-sawn brackets and a simple balustrade dominates the five-bay west facade, and the windows are two-over-two wooden sashes. A frame garage on the southwest corner also contributes. Henry B. Garrett, a local businessman who ran a domino hall on the square and raised hunting dogs to guide quail hunters, is believed to have had the house built soon after buying the lot in 1905. It was listed for its architecture. Most of Wharton's historic homes are vernacular, and this one is regarded as the finest example of the locally rare center-passage form, retaining its integrity despite the rear addition.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1905","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Other: Center-passage House (vernacular)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling and remains in the Garrett family.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.350558-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/14/9707/40970714/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/93000098.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970714","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110000903"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/wharton-county/garrett-henry-b-house-93000098/"}
