Perry Street in Palestine, Anderson County, Texas, built in 1848 for Judge Reuben A. Reeves, probably by builder James Bunda, and expanded over later decades.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an excellent and rare example of a small East Texas Greek Revival cottage, detailed on a grand scale with fine proportions. It retains most of its original materials and high integrity despite rear additions. It is rated significant at the state level under Criterion C for architecture.","narrative":"Built in 1848 two blocks north of the courthouse square in Palestine, Texas, this small frame house is one of the few early settler homes left in the town. Judge Reuben A. Reeves commissioned it, probably from the builder James Bunda, and Colonel George R. Howard, a merchant, bought it in 1850. Its center-passage plan is fronted by a pedimented portico with four square Doric columns and corner pilasters. The walls are weatherboard over a brick foundation. The Howard family added rooms at the rear in four phases, including a kitchen, bedrooms and a dining room, but the front facade and original core remain largely intact. The farm that once surrounded it has shrunk to a city lot. A Greek Revival specialist quoted in the nomination called it one of the best small Greek Revival houses in Texas. It was listed for its architecture, at state-level significance. It now operates as a museum.","period_of_significance":"1848-c.1900","architect_builder":"Bunda, James (builder)","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historically a single dwelling; now used as a museum (Howard House Museum), owned by the City of Palestine.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.402768-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/81/9709/40970981/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/93000072.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000072/e9f26df177-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000072/e9f26df177-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HowardHouse3.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HowardHouse3.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"98000825","name":"North Side Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/texas/north-side-historic-district-98000825/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970981","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_House_(Palestine,_Texas)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5919919"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/anderson-county/howard-house-93000072/"}
