It was reduced to a half-house in 1827 and later enlarged with additions.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house retains surviving elements of late First Period architecture along with well-preserved mid-nineteenth-century interior finishes and exterior changes. It is also tied to the family of Robert Proctor, one of Westford's first settlers. It is judged significant locally under Criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built about 1720-1740 by John Proctor II, this timber-frame house at 218 Concord Road in Westford began as a five-bay, center-chimney dwelling. In 1827 the western section was sold to a neighbor, Henry Fletcher, who apparently dismantled the chimney and western bay, leaving the surviving half-house. The remaining owners adapted it with a new chimney, a west addition around 1840-1870, enlarged windows, a boxed cornice and a balloon-frame rear ell added about 1900. The house keeps its side-gabled roof, sparse window arrangement, clapboard siding, fieldstone foundation and oak framing with flared posts, all typical of late First Period work. It was listed for its architecture, as an unusual full-width center-chimney house reduced to a half-house, and for its link to the family of Robert Proctor, an early Westford settler. The 1.16-acre site also has high potential for archaeological remains.","period_of_significance":"1720-1930","architect_builder":"John Proctor","architectural_style":"COLONIAL: Post Medieval English; New England Colonial","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Owners rent the house to residential tenants; it survives remarkably intact on 1.16 acres, with a modern garage and a barn cellar hole nearby.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.794874-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/30/7956/63795630/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/93000011.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000011/6f9b50bf17-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000011/6f9b50bf17-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WestfordMA_JohnProctorHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WestfordMA_JohnProctorHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795630","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Proctor_House_(Westford,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15713040"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/proctor-john-house-93000011/"}
