Its original hardware, mantels and woodwork survive with little alteration. Federal soldiers also occupied the house in 1862 and 1864 during the Civil War.","narrative":"Mount Stirling is a red brick plantation house of two and a half stories on a raised basement, set on a broad hill above pasture and woodland along the Chickahominy River in Charles City County. Construction began in 1851 for William Jerdone, one of the county's wealthiest planters, on a tract of more than 2,000 acres. It replaced an eighteenth-century dwelling. Greek Revival features include a small Ionic portico, stepped gable parapets and a central-passage, double-pile plan. Inside, original mantels, plasterwork, heart pine floors, locks and hinges survive. A Federal-style balustrade lightens the roofline. An altered frame kitchen from the earlier plantation complex is the only remaining dependency, and the ruins of a probable slave house lie to the east. Federal soldiers occupied the house in 1862 and 1864. The house was listed because it is a remarkably intact example of its style, among the last great plantation residences built in the county before the Civil War.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling; the house retains a high degree of integrity, with a 1940s rear porch and mid-twentieth-century second-floor alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.547446-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/8/6800/41680008/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/93000005.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000005/b42c5ee1d8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/93000005/b42c5ee1d8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MOUNT_STIRLING,_CHARLES_CITY_COUNTY,_VA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680008","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Stirling_(Providence_Forge,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712914"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/charles-city-county/mount-stirling-93000005/"}
