Barber and his mother Lucie Barber and built between 1899 and 1901.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is locally significant under Criterion C as a fine example of Classical Revival residential design, with a virtually intact exterior and elegantly crafted interior. It is also the work of Chicago architect Joseph Lyman Silsbee, who gave Frank Lloyd Wright some of his first architectural training.","narrative":"Built between 1899 and 1901 at 103 North Barber Avenue in Polo, Illinois, this two-story yellow brick house was designed by Chicago architect Joseph Lyman Silsbee for Bryant H. Barber and his mother, Lucie. Its Classical Revival character shows in a hipped roof with a flat deck, wooden dentils at the eaves, and a central entry porch carried on ten wooden columns with egg and dart molding. Inside, a grand central hall has mahogany pilasters and columns, and the library, music room, parlor and dining room feature mahogany paneling, mosaic tile and original painted canvas ceilings. Servants' quarters, a dumb waiter, speaking tubes and a cooling system for the basement remain. A garage added around 1908 has an operable turntable. The house is regarded as one of the better Classical Revival residences in Polo, and it is notable as the work of Silsbee, whose Chicago office once trained Frank Lloyd Wright. The original tile roof, balustrades and brackets were removed in the early 1950s.","period_of_significance":"1901","architect_builder":"Silsbee, Joseph Lyman","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Remains a private single-family residence on its original lot; roof-line balustrades were partly replaced in 1992 and the kitchen was remodeled in 1990.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.29574-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/89/8937/28893789/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/92001849.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001849/ee8f5647d0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001849/ee8f5647d0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.5","author":"Andy McMurray","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ogle_County_Polo_Il_B_and_L_Barber_House1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Andy McMurray</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.5</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ogle_County_Polo_Il_B_and_L_Barber_House1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893789","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryant_H._and_Lucie_Barber_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4980579"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/ogle-county/barber-bryant-h-and-lucie-house-92001849/"}
