It is an Italianate two-part commercial block with Gothic Revival and Mission Revival influences. It also served as the leading mercantile store in the young town of Kingsville.","narrative":"Raglands is a two-story brick commercial building on the corner of Kleberg Avenue and 6th Street in downtown Kingsville, Texas. Designed by Victoria architect Jules Carl Leffland and built in 1909, it replaced a small frame store opened in 1904 by John B. Ragland, one of the town's earliest merchants. Its Italianate design includes brackets, a denticulated and crenellated cornice, limestone belt courses and a corner tower with a cupola, with touches of Gothic Revival and Mission Revival. Large display windows and plain, rectangular upper windows mark it as an early 20th-century transitional building. A one-story grocery addition followed in 1910. The store became the leading mercantile business in town and later a major department store, remodeled in 1950 under designer Raymond Loewy and closed in 1979. King Ranch, Inc., restored the building in 1989 using original drawings. It was listed for its architecture and its role as a local landmark.","period_of_significance":"1909-1910","architect_builder":"Leffland, Jules Carl","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Restored in 1989 by King Ranch, Inc., and now houses the King Ranch Saddle Shop; the department store closed in 1979.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.039017-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/92/9727/40972792/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/92001820.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001820/7ecc232e26-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001820/7ecc232e26-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_B._Ragland_Mercantile_Company_Building,_Kingsville,_Texas.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_B._Ragland_Mercantile_Company_Building,_Kingsville,_Texas.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100002845","name":"Kingsville Downtown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/texas/kingsville-downtown-historic-district-100002845/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972792","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_B._Ragland_Mercantile_Company_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6220095"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/kleberg-county/ragland-john-b-mercantile-company-building-92001820/"}
