It is also a good example of Craftsman architecture from the peak of the Arts and Crafts movement.","narrative":"Hotel Charlotta is a large Craftsman-style resort hotel on a hilltop at 637 South Upas in Escondido. Opened on January 20, 1915, it was built for tourists, including visitors to the Panama International Exposition in San Diego. It offered twenty-five bedrooms, a sun parlor, a dining and ballroom, and a massive stone fireplace built by John A. Simmons. The T-shaped wood-frame building has a low multi-gable roof with wide eaves, knee braces, carved beam ends and surrounding balconies, along with rock walls and a steep entry stair. The hotel is the last remaining Escondido hotel built for scenery and leisure; two other rural hotels there have been demolished. From 1915 to about 1940 it hosted most of the city's major social events, and local Rotary and Kiwanis clubs met there weekly. Its Craftsman character and surviving garden layout reflect the Arts and Crafts movement. Restoration was under way when it was nominated.","period_of_significance":"1915 - 1940","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early 20th Century: Craftsman","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Undergoing restoration at the time of the nomination; the grounds were described as smaller and run down, and the building was reported to retain its integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.652667-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/92001752.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001752/7a9046e203-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001752/7a9046e203-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Anechka2003","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hotel_Charlotta.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Anechka2003</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hotel_Charlotta.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860884","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5903330"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-diego-county/hotel-charlotta-92001752/"}
