Begun in 1907 as the second structure of Massanutten Military Academy, it received a rear ell in 1926.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is the finest example of Late Gothic Revival architecture in Woodstock and an excellent early-twentieth-century Collegiate Gothic building. It also matters to the history of education in Virginia, given the declining number of military academies. It honors William C. Lantz, a founding trustee whose gift paid for it.","narrative":"Lantz Hall is a brick-veneered Late Gothic Revival building on a hill at the southern edge of Woodstock, Virginia, facing South Main Street. Begun in 1907 and dedicated in 1909, it was the second building of Massanutten Military Academy. Funding came from William C. Lantz, a founding trustee, justice of the peace and bank vice-president, who dedicated it to his parents. The T-plan main block has a projecting tower pavilion, a pointed-arched porch, sandstone sill courses and quoins, and a large first-floor auditorium with stained-glass windows. A rear ell added in 1926 repeated the original design and increased dormitory and classroom space. Stained glass in the front pavilion was removed in 1967. The building served as dormitory, classroom and assembly space until the dormitory use ended in 1991. It was listed for its architectural quality, as the best example of Late Gothic Revival design in Woodstock, and for its link to Virginia's military school education.","period_of_significance":"1907 - 1926","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century Revivals: Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use by the academy: the auditorium is the main assembly hall, the ell holds classrooms, and the basement houses the heating plant, rifle range and maintenance rooms. It stopped serving as a dormitory in 1991.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.677853-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/97/6835/41683597/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/92001711.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001711/c36619d5b3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001711/c36619d5b3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LANTZ_HALL,_SHENANDOAH_COUNTY,_VIRGINIA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683597","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lantz_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15241667"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/shenandoah-county/lantz-hall-92001711/"}
