A frame house of about 1880 forms the east wing, and a three-story brick hotel wing was added in 1935.","why_significant":"The hotel is significant under Criterion A for its role in the tourist and recreation economy of Highlands and western North Carolina. It is significant under Criterion C for its architecture, including a brick wing by Atlanta architect Linton H. Young in an Italian Alpine style described as unique in the region. It is also one of only four surviving late nineteenth-century inns in Highlands.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of Main and Fourth Streets in Highlands, this hotel combines two building campaigns. The older part is a frame, two-and-a-half-story house of about 1880 with a double porch, later used as the Norton House and then the Central House boarding inn. In 1935 the Edwards family added a three-story brick wing designed by Atlanta architect Linton H. Young, who gave it Italianate details that created an Italian Alpine, or Tyrolean, character. Stone salvaged from a nearby rock store faces the entrance and the north porch. The Edwards family ran the hotel from 1914 until it closed in 1970. Renovation in 1982 added balconies, a new frame wing and service buildings, yet the building still resembles its 1930s appearance. It is recognized for its place in the resort economy that shaped Highlands and for its architecture, and it is one of only four surviving late nineteenth-century inns in town.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1880-1942","architect_builder":"Young, Linton Hopkins, architect; Cobb, Wilton H., contractor","architectural_style":"Italian Alpine; two-story frame vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Closed in 1970 in poor condition and later renovated in 1982; the form lists its current function as a hotel, with a restaurant in the frame section.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.341004-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/30/7211/47721130/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/92001614.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001614/9d091c8b27-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001614/9d091c8b27-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:OLD_EDWARDS_INN,_HIGHLANDS,_MACON_COUNTY,_NC.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721130","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwards_Hotel_(Highlands,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17508234"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/macon-county/edwards-hotel-92001614/"}
