It retains a high degree of original fabric and is one of few survivors of a once-numerous class of American steam vessel. It also represents an aspect of New York's maritime history, including work for the U.S. Immigration Service at Ellis Island (Criterion A, added at listing).","narrative":"Built in 1907 by Neatie & Levy of Philadelphia, the ferryboat Machigonne, later called Hook Mountain, Block Island and finally Yankee, is a riveted steel, propeller-driven ferry now berthed at Pier 25 in Manhattan. She was launched to carry passengers, cargo and livestock between Maine's Casco Bay islands and the mainland. In 1913 she moved to a Boston route, and in 1917 she served as a patrol boat and troop ferry in Boston Harbor. From 1921 she carried immigrants between steamers, Ellis Island and New York City, and in the 1930s she carried tour passengers around the harbor. Her engine was replaced in 1947, but the engine room layout, passenger salon, oak benches, mahogany trim and wheelhouse fittings survive from the original vessel. Few ferries of this type remain. She was listed as an intact example of an early twentieth century steam ferry and as a vessel tied to New York's maritime history. She now serves as an excursion boat and museum.","period_of_significance":"1907-1942","architect_builder":"Neatie & Levy (builder)","architectural_style":"Other: Propeller-driven ferry","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently used as an excursion boat and museum at Pier 25, New York Harbor.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.940154-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001610.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001610/34dc5bfb1e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001610/34dc5bfb1e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dmadeo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yankee-ferry.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmadeo</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yankee-ferry.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319710","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yankee_(ferry)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8048729"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/machigonne-ferry-92001610/"}
