It reflects both the turnpike era and the later Erie Railroad era of Cochecton's development. It retains a high level of architectural integrity, setting and scale, with only one non-contributing building.","narrative":"Parsonage Road is a short, narrow street in the hamlet of Cochecton, branching off the old turnpike route and backed by a wooded hillside above the railroad. Along it stand seven two-story frame dwellings and several outbuildings, including a large barn, built between about 1820 and 1902. The houses show vernacular Federal, Greek Revival and Queen Anne styles, most with clapboard siding and many with decorative shingling, porches and corner towers. The street grew as an offshoot of the Newburgh-Cochecton Turnpike and filled in after the Erie Railroad arrived in 1848, with most buildings dating from 1875 to 1902. Later economic decline left the area largely unaltered. The district was listed because it is an unusually intact rural residential enclave, keeping its historic scale, spacing and landscape. Only a 1989 garage or workshop intrudes on its nineteenth-century character, and few comparable enclaves in the river valley survive so complete.","period_of_significance":"1820-1902","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal; Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival; Late Victorian/Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is domestic/single dwelling; the district retains a high level of integrity, with one non-contributing garage/workshop built in 1989.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.705031-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001600.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001600/3bd78a99b0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001600/3bd78a99b0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Vonsky87","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Parsonage_Rd_Historic_Dist._Home.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Vonsky87</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Parsonage_Rd_Historic_Dist._Home.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315023","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parsonage_Road_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7140031"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/sullivan-county/parsonage-road-historic-district-92001600/"}
