It is also linked to local politician and judge James Clark Curtis, who lived and worked there from 1835 to 1872 (Criterion B).","narrative":"Built around 1810 beside the Newburgh-Cochecton Turnpike, this one-and-one-half-story frame house in Cochecton shows how New England building traditions travelled west along the road. A central block with a center chimney, boxed stairs, wide plank floors, panelled doors and coved plaster ceilings was later flanked by wings: a kitchen wing around 1840 and an office wing around 1850. Its builder is unknown. In 1835 James Clark Curtis, a merchant, lumberman and politician, moved in. He served as turnpike company treasurer, Justice of the Peace, State Assemblyman, State Senator and First Judge of Sullivan County, and he held court and kept his office at the house. After he moved to Callicoon in 1872, the house stayed in the family of his daughter Caroline Drake until 1990. Rehabilitation work that year replaced sills and rebuilt part of the stone foundation, yet many original elements remain. The nomination calls it the Upper Delaware's finest vernacular Federal house.","period_of_significance":"1810-1855 (architecture); 1835-1869 (Criterion B)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Extensively rehabilitated beginning in 1990 after moisture and deterioration problems; described as in good repair with a high degree of integrity.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.870491-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001598.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001598/c1dfd13531-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001598/c1dfd13531-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Vonsky87","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Drake-Curtis_House,_Cochecton,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Vonsky87</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Drake-Curtis_House,_Cochecton,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315050","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake-Curtis_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5305581"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/sullivan-county/drake-curtis-house-92001598/"}
