It has a three-story corner tower, wrap-around porch, colored glass windows and decorative shingling. It also reflects the influence of the Erie Railroad on local building styles and the career of its builder, Ellery Calkins.","narrative":"Near the Delaware River in Cochecton, New York, this large two-story frame house shows the Queen Anne style at its most elaborate in the upper valley. Its present form dates to about 1890, though a house may have stood on the site as early as the 1850s. The most striking features are a three-story corner tower with a six-sided top story, a steep pyramidal roof, and colored glass windows, along with a wrap-around porch trimmed in decorative millwork. The interior keeps its original layout, with only the rear kitchen modernized. A shed and a barn from the late nineteenth century also survive. Ellery Calkins, a Cochecton native, local businessman and civic leader, built the house during his career, which was boosted by the Erie Railroad's arrival nearby. The railroad brought mass-produced millwork and fashionable styles to the valley. The house was listed for its architecture, as the best-preserved example among many simpler Queen Anne dwellings in the area.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1890 (amended from the original 1850-ca. 1890)","architect_builder":"Ellery Calkins (builder)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"All buildings on the property are described as in excellent condition; the house is a single dwelling in current use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.22774-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001595.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001595/4c2229ebce-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001595/4c2229ebce-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ellery_Calkins_House_Feb_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ellery_Calkins_House_Feb_10.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315031","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellery_Calkins_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5365216"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/sullivan-county/calkins-ellery-house-92001595/"}
