Goodwyn.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant in agriculture as the main house of a cotton plantation that keeps several historic farm outbuildings. It is also significant in architecture as a fine rural Greek Revival house with a Doric portico, original mantels and chimneys, and heavy timber frame construction, built early in the settlement of Georgia's western frontier.","narrative":"Set on a slight rise above White Oak Creek about thirty-five miles southwest of Atlanta, this two-story Greek Revival house was built around 1835-1840 as the center of a cotton plantation. Thomas D. Goodwyn established the farm, and his son-in-law John L. Bailey later lived there, with the Bailey family remaining until 1949. The house is one room deep with a central hall, a pedimented two-story portico on Doric columns, seven fireplaces, heart pine woodwork with graining, and a heavy timber frame joined with mortise and tenon. Surviving barns, a buggy shed, stone piers and old oaks and catalpas recall a larger self-sufficient farm. After decades of neglect, a restoration in 1988-1989 reopened closed windows, rebuilt the staircase and added a detached kitchen based on photographs. The property is valued as an example of the antebellum Georgia farm and of early Greek Revival design in the region. The architect is unknown, and a possible link to builder William Yarbrough is not claimed.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1835-1942","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Restored by the current owners in 1988-1989 after years of deterioration; still used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.598375-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/92001520.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001520/15efd85142-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001520/15efd85142-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dlamarca","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Goodwyn_House_ca._1890s.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Dlamarca</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Goodwyn_House_ca._1890s.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207659","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodwyn-Bailey_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5583731"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/coweta-county/goodwyn-bailey-house-92001520/"}
