The house is dated 1773 by an inscription in the plaster of the western gable attic wall.","why_significant":"The house is regarded as a rare survivor of a late 18th-century vernacular stone house in southwestern Pennsylvania, and few stone houses from before 1798 are documented as extant in the region. Its builder, Andrew Rabb, was a prominent distiller and local leader who was involved in the Whiskey Rebellion protests against the excise tax.","narrative":"Built in 1773 as a 2½-story, five-bay stone house above Brown's Run in German Township, Fayette County, the Rabb House follows a plain vernacular Georgian plan with a central hall and stair and no exterior ornament. Its stone walls, flat-arched windows with central keystones, and an unusually high cornice remain largely intact, though a fire in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century led to a roof rebuild. Andrew Rabb (c. 1740-1804) was a wealthy distiller, justice of the peace and former captain in the Westmoreland rangers. He was assessed with four stills in 1795 and was one of the wealthiest men in German Township by 1796. He was charged, though never proven guilty, with offering a reward for the death of an excise collector during the Whiskey Rebellion, and later helped represent the township at the 1794 Parkinson's Ferry meeting. The house is significant as one of few pre-1798 stone houses surviving in the region.","period_of_significance":"1773-1804","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular Georgian","criteria":["A","B"],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:36.606266-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/92001497.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001497/3eb4c04220-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001497/3eb4c04220-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Generic1139","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andrew_Rabb_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Generic1139</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andrew_Rabb_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71992941","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Rabb_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4758347"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/fayette-county/rabb-andrew-house-92001497/"}
