It was built for a merchant and his consumptive wife, and later served as a rooming cottage for tuberculosis patients. It remains virtually intact.","narrative":"Built between about 1911 and 1913 on Helen Hill in Saranac Lake, this two and one-half story house was designed by the architects Scopes and Feustmann for local merchant Earl Lenier Gray and his wife Beatrice, who suffered from tuberculosis. It is a representative cure cottage, a building type common in the village during the era when outdoor treatment of the disease drew patients there. Its features include a first-floor sitting porch, an upstairs cure porch large enough to turn a patient's bed, many six-over-one windows, wide doors without high sills, a dumbwaiter and a call annunciator in the kitchen. Inside, Craftsman-style beamed ceilings, light fixtures and a fieldstone fireplace survive. In 1925 the house was sold to three women who ran it as a rooming cottage for tuberculosis patients. It retains its original form, materials and setting, and its significance rests on its architecture and its link to health and medicine.","period_of_significance":"1911 - c.1940","architect_builder":"Scopes and Feustmann","architectural_style":"Shingle style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as a single dwelling in current use; the form says it remains virtually intact with no later additions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.946167-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001469.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001469/671647b647-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001469/671647b647-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E_L_Gray_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E_L_Gray_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001451","name":"New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-central-railroad-adirondack-division-historic-district-93001451/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313058","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._L._Gray_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5322008"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/franklin-county/gray-e-l-house-92001469/"}
