Its many added cure porches are described as perhaps the best local example of a private residence evolving into a large-scale private sanatorium. It also retains nearly all of its original Queen Anne details and cure-related features.","narrative":"Built around 1898 on a village lot in Saranac Lake's Helen Hill neighborhood, this three-story wood-frame house follows Queen Anne design, with a multi-gabled roof, narrow clapboard siding, a coursed stone foundation and a wrap-around veranda. Local carpenter Silas Blauvelt built it as an investment and leased it as a boarding cottage. In 1908 it was sold to the widowed Mary Noyes and her daughter Catherine, who continued to take in ambulatory tuberculosis patients. Under their ownership the house gained six cure porches, some with sliding glass panels and French doors for rolling out beds, and its third floor was enlarged. Inside, the original cherry woodwork, pocket doors, plaster ceiling decoration and nineteenth-century bath fixtures survive. The house is valued as a representative Saranac Lake cure cottage and as a clear record of how a private home was gradually converted into a large boarding sanatorium. Catherine Noyes ran it until some time after World War II.","period_of_significance":"ca.1915 - ca.1940","architect_builder":"Silas Blauvelt (builder)","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed current function is single dwelling; the form describes the house as retaining original interior woodwork, cure porches and sliding glass panels.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.86722-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001468.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001468/2aa656c031-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001468/2aa656c031-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Saranac_Lake_Cure_Cottage.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Saranac_Lake_Cure_Cottage.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001451","name":"New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-central-railroad-adirondack-division-historic-district-93001451/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313056","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noyes_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7067367"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/franklin-county/noyes-cottage-92001468/"}
