Its cure porches are built into the body of the house, and it retains features such as wide porch doors, many ventilating windows and call buttons. It was once a registered private sanatorium run as a boarding cottage.","narrative":"Built in 1908 on a steep lot in the Helen Hill area of Saranac Lake, this large two-and-one-half-story cottage was designed to help tuberculosis patients recover outdoors. It has narrow clapboard siding, a hipped-gabled roof with exposed rafters, cobblestone chimneys, and a granite and fieldstone foundation. Five cure porches encircle the house, and some are enclosed with sliding windows and set inside the main structure as integral parts of the design. Wide doors open onto the porches, many windows provide ventilation, and call buttons remain on the porches. The lower level once held servants' quarters. The house served at one time as a registered private sanatorium operated as a boarding cottage. It is recognized as an excellent local example of cure cottage architecture with Craftsman-inspired character, and it keeps a high degree of integrity. It is also tied to the area's history in health and medicine, and it remains a single-family dwelling.","period_of_significance":"1908-c.1940","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Arts and Crafts (Craftsman-inspired)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Essentially in its original condition, with limited alterations; still used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:46.195986-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001464.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001464/f19420bb0f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001464/f19420bb0f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bogie_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bogie_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"15000754","name":"Helen Hill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/helen-hill-historic-district-15000754/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312906","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogie_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4937635"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/essex-county/bogie-cottage-92001464/"}
