It has not been significantly altered and retains a high degree of integrity. It is also associated with health and medicine in the village.","narrative":"Built around 1920 on Helen Hill in Saranac Lake, this Colonial Revival apartment building at 18 Franklin Avenue was designed to house tuberculosis patients and their families. It is a two and one-half story, side-gabled frame building with two southward wings that flank a central pedimented entrance. The wings hold four identical cure porches, one for each two-bedroom tenant apartment, each measuring 9 by 13 feet with oak flooring and six-over-one sash. Simon Ades, a tuberculosis patient from Baltimore, built it and left it to his nurse, Cornelia L. Nourse. Dr. Malcolm Lent, a tuberculosis specialist, owned it in 1925 and sold it in 1933. At one time it was registered with the village T.B. Society as a sanatorium. It is considered significant because few Saranac Lake apartment houses were originally designed for tuberculosis patients, and this one has changed little since construction, keeping its original materials, design, setting and association.","period_of_significance":"ca.1920-ca.1940","architect_builder":"Scopes & Feustmann (architect); Simon Ades (builder)","architectural_style":"Late 19th & 20th Century Revivals: Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a multiple dwelling (apartments); described as not significantly modified since construction.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.260851-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001462.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001462/150a5e5996-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001462/150a5e5996-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lent_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lent_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"15000754","name":"Helen Hill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/helen-hill-historic-district-15000754/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312918","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lent_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6523295"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/essex-county/lent-cottage-92001462/"}
