Its multiple glazed cure porches, including an unusual L-shaped one, show its progression from a family house to a boarding house and then a registered private sanatorium. It retains a high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Radwell Cottage is a two-and-one-half story wood frame house at 2 Charles Street in the French Hill neighborhood of Saranac Lake. Built before 1896 on a native fieldstone foundation, it has clapboard and shingle siding, a gabled red metal roof, and an asymmetrical Queen Anne-inspired plan with projecting porches and bays. It was built by the local contractors Branch & Callanan. It is significant as an intact example of the cure cottages that housed tuberculosis patients in the village. Begun as a single-family residence, it likely became a boarding house, and glass-enclosed cure porches were later added, including an unusual L-shaped one. A 1917 health survey recorded tuberculous occupants, and in 1922 it was a registered private sanatorium run by Mrs. Sarah Radwell and a partner. Original paneled doors, woodwork, a staircase newel post and a pressed tin kitchen ceiling survive inside. The house is again a single-family home.","period_of_significance":"c.1896-c.1930","architect_builder":"Branch & Callanan (Mr. Callanan), local contractors","architectural_style":"Late 19th & 20th Century Revivals: Colonial Revival (Queen Anne-inspired)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single-family dwelling; it retains a high degree of architectural integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.259733-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001456.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001456/be11873637-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001456/be11873637-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Radwell_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Radwell_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001451","name":"New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-central-railroad-adirondack-division-historic-district-93001451/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313005","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radwell_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7281797"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/franklin-county/radwell-cottage-92001456/"}
