It is significant under architecture (Criterion C) and is also associated with health and medicine. Records show it housed tuberculosis patients in the 1910s and 1920s.","narrative":"Built in 1909 at 22 Catherine Street in Saranac Lake, this two-story wood frame house is clad in cedar shingles and sits on a treed lot that drops sharply at the rear to a buttressed stone retaining wall. Local architects Scopes and Feustmann designed it for Dr. Albert Henry Allen. The rectangular, gabled building has shed and gable dormers and a central hall plan with two rooms on each side, and much original woodwork survives. An intact first-floor cure porch, screened on the east and fitted with sliding windows on the south, reflects its original purpose. The house is considered a representative cure cottage, a type developed in the village for the outdoor treatment of tuberculosis. It was leased to tenants between 1910 and 1915, and a 1917 health survey recorded tuberculosis patients living there. In 1925 a physician and a boarding mistress lived there with a patient. Since 1935 it has served as a single family home.","period_of_significance":"1909-1935","architect_builder":"Scopes and Feustmann","architectural_style":"Late 19th & 20th Century American Movements: Bungalow/Craftsman","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single family residence since 1935; the cure porch at the southeastern corner is intact, while two other porches have been modified with new windows.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.988851-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001454.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001454/937ec65c5b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001454/937ec65c5b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr_A_H_Allen_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr_A_H_Allen_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001451","name":"New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-central-railroad-adirondack-division-historic-district-93001451/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312991","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._A._H._Allen_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5303944"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/franklin-county/allen-dr-a-h-cottage-92001454/"}
