Its original sleeping porches and other curing features survive, giving it high architectural and design integrity. It also reflects the health and medicine history of Saranac Lake as a tuberculosis treatment center.","narrative":"Built in 1923 at 5 Birch Street in Saranac Lake, this two-story, three-bay house with a hipped roof was designed from the start for treating tuberculosis patients. Margaret Hopkins, a Licensed Practical Nurse, bought the lot in February 1923 and opened a private nursing establishment that September, with room for five patients. The first floor has narrow clapboard and the upper floor staggered shingles. Glazed sleeping porches with sliding panels wrap the house, and each of the four upstairs bedrooms has its own cure porch reached by wide French doors without high sills. Gouges in the door frames show where beds were pushed outdoors. Hopkins died before 1940, and the house was sold in April of that year and has been a single-family home since. It is considered significant as an unusually intact example of a purpose-built cure cottage, retaining its porches, floors, doors and moldings, and its setting and location.","period_of_significance":"1923 - 1940","architect_builder":"Built by Margaret Hopkins, a Licensed Practical Nurse; architect unknown","architectural_style":"Late 19th & Early 20th Century American Movements: Bungalow/Craftsman","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single-family residence since 1940; sleeping porches and original floors, doors and moldings remain intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.721259-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001448.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001448/b3bdb6847a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001448/b3bdb6847a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hopkins_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hopkins_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001451","name":"New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-central-railroad-adirondack-division-historic-district-93001451/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313032","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hopkins_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5900650"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/franklin-county/hopkins-cottage-92001448/"}
