It later operated as a boarding house and registered private sanatorium. It retains a high degree of integrity in setting, location, materials, design and association.","narrative":"Set at the top of a hill on Baker Street, at the foot of Mt. Pisgah on the northern edge of Saranac Lake, this cottage was built around 1910 as a home for people curing from tuberculosis. The two-and-a-half story house is square in form, with a steep gambrel roof, cedar shingles, a stone foundation and an enclosed entrance porch. A shed-roofed dormer marks a second-story cure porch large enough to turn a bed. A small wooden cabin perched on boulders behind the house also contributes. Directories list occupants in 1910-1911 and 1921, and the house may have been the work of local architect William G. Distin. Later, Mrs. M. J. Pomeroy ran it as a boarding house that became a registered private sanatorium, with space for five ambulatory patients around 1935. It was listed for its architecture and its role in the health and medicine history of Saranac Lake, and it retains a high degree of integrity.","period_of_significance":"c.1910-c.1940","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Craftsman (Bungalow/Craftsman)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single dwelling; the form describes it as retaining a high degree of architectural and historical integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.344344-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001447.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001447/97306a59b6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001447/97306a59b6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pomeroy_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pomeroy_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001451","name":"New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-central-railroad-adirondack-division-historic-district-93001451/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312987","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomeroy_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7227284"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/franklin-county/pomeroy-cottage-92001447/"}
