It is also linked to author Robert Louis Stevenson, who rented the western wing in the winter of 1887-88 while recovering from lung ailments. It illustrates the early period of Saranac Lake as a health resort.","narrative":"Built in 1865-66 by Andrew Baker, a successful local guide, this one and one-half story wood frame house on Stevenson Lane in the town of St. Armand began as a family home with the western half rented to summer sportsmen. It has an L-shaped plan, a fieldstone foundation, clapboard siding, gable roofs with asphalt shingles, and an open shed-roofed veranda on the west facade. An attached barn stands at one end. In October 1887 author Robert Louis Stevenson and his family rented the western wing for the winter while he recovered from lung ailments, staying until April. The separate quarters and spacious veranda made the house an early example of the cure cottages that later defined Saranac Lake as a health resort. After the Bakers died in the mid-1920s, the Stevenson Society of America bought the property and continues to operate it as a museum. The building retains a high degree of integrity in design, materials, setting and association.","period_of_significance":"ca.1865-ca.1940","architect_builder":"Andrew Baker (builder, per the narrative); the form's architect/builder field is n/a","architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Maintained as a museum of Robert Louis Stevenson memorabilia; the form reports a high degree of architectural integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.740138-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001441.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001441/25fbf48fb4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001441/25fbf48fb4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Saranac_Lake_-_Stevenson_Cottage.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Saranac_Lake_-_Stevenson_Cottage.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001451","name":"New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-central-railroad-adirondack-division-historic-district-93001451/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312942","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevenson_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7615518"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/essex-county/stevenson-cottage-92001441/"}
