It has two sets of over-under verandas and a greater proportion of fresh air facilities than any other private building in Saranac Lake. It also retains considerable architectural integrity.","narrative":"Johnson Cottage is a square, two-story frame house on a small hill at 6 1/2 St. Bernard Street in Saranac Lake, built before 1896 and sided in clapboard and shingles under a metal-shingled hipped roof. Around 1915 it was fitted with an unusually large number of porches, including two sets of over-under wrap-around verandas, sleeping porches and \"sitting out\" porches. Each floor holds a single flat, and each flat has four porches. Richard and Lillian Johnson bought the property around 1915. He was a livery man, and she managed the house as a commercial cure cottage, as she did several others, including the well-known Linwood Cottage. It served that purpose through at least 1929. The building is significant as a representative example of a residence adapted for the outdoor treatment of tuberculosis, with more fresh air facilities than any other private building in the village. It has not undergone major alterations and retains considerable architectural integrity.","period_of_significance":"c.1896-c.1940","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Retains considerable architectural integrity with no major alterations; current function is multiple dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.245028-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001436.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001436/9547741b99-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001436/9547741b99-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Johnson_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Johnson_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001451","name":"New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-central-railroad-adirondack-division-historic-district-93001451/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313048","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnson_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6268235"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/franklin-county/johnson-cottage-92001436/"}
