Its prominent two-story cure porches illustrate the outdoor sleeping porches used by tuberculosis patients on bedrest. It retains a high degree of integrity as a residence later converted to a commercial sanatorium.","narrative":"Overlooking Riverside Drive and Lake Flower in Saranac Lake, this two-and-one-half story wood-frame house was built around 1905-1906 as a cure cottage. William Schrader, who came from Rochester and kept an architectural office on Main Street, reportedly designed and built it as his own residence. Later, the Griswolds operated it as a commercial private sanatorium. The house is Queen Anne inspired, with clapboard walls, shingled gable ends, embossed metal shingle roofing and an asymmetrical arrangement of paired one-over-one windows. A two-story cure porch dominates the front, and a one-story veranda wraps the east and north sides. Such porches gave tuberculosis patients on bedrest outdoor sleeping space with direct access to their bedrooms. Inside, the original Georgia pine woodwork and flooring remain. Renovations in the 1950s modernized the bathrooms and created a third-floor apartment. It was listed for its architectural value as an intact example of Saranac Lake's cure cottages, and a rear garage also contributes.","period_of_significance":"ca.1905-ca.1940","architect_builder":"William Schrader reportedly designed and built it (the property report lists the architect as unknown)","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as multiple dwellings; the third floor was converted to a separate apartment in the 1950s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.840122-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001432.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001432/311c85644b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001432/311c85644b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Schrader-Griswold_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Schrader-Griswold_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001451","name":"New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-central-railroad-adirondack-division-historic-district-93001451/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313046","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schrader-Griswold_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7432787"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/franklin-county/schrader-griswold-cottage-92001432/"}
