Magill. A contributing two-car garage is on the lot.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an intact example of a Saranac Lake cure cottage from the early twentieth century. It keeps its glazed cure porches, sliding glass panels and call bells. It was first a family home and later a private sanatorium, and it retains a high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Perched on a steep hillside above Riverside Drive and Lake Flower in Saranac Lake, this shingled, hip-roofed house was built around 1911 by local carpenters Benjamin and Lynn Woodruff for Lemuel B. Magill. Magill founded the Saranac Lake Troy Laundry in 1909, which cleaned and sterilized linen for the village's tuberculosis curing industry. After his death in 1916 the family stayed until 1920. By 1925 his widow and her new husband ran the house as a registered private sanatorium, renting four second-floor bedrooms. In 1926 it returned to single-family use. The house has two sleeping porches, a fully glazed cure porch with sliding panels, and call bells connecting the rooms to the kitchen. Inside are original moldings, hardwood floors, a paneled staircase, and a beamed living room with a fieldstone fireplace. It was listed as an intact example of a Saranac Lake cure cottage, with a high degree of architectural integrity and its curing features preserved.","period_of_significance":"ca.1911 - ca.1940","architect_builder":"Benjamin and Lynn Woodruff (local carpenters)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Stick style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently in use as a single dwelling; historically also a registered private sanatorium in the 1920s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.871466-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001430.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001430/1e452d0efb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001430/1e452d0efb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Magill_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Magill_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001451","name":"New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-central-railroad-adirondack-division-historic-district-93001451/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313036","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magill_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6731098"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/franklin-county/magill-cottage-additional-documentation-92001430/"}
