Its octagonal cure porches and inset veranda show how architecture was adapted to the needs of tuberculosis patients. It was designed by local architects Scopes & Feustmann, with cobblestone work attributed to mason Pietro Tanzini.","narrative":"Morgan Cottage, at 100 Park Avenue in Saranac Lake, is a one and one-half story wood-frame house built around 1915-16 as a cure cottage for tuberculosis patients. Cobblestone walls rise to the base of the first-floor windows, with clapboard above, under a broad gable roof with deep eaves. An inset front veranda and an octagonal cure porch, large enough for sleeping, reflect the needs of patients taking the outdoor cure. Inside, a call bell system links every room and porch to a console in the kitchen, and original wainscoting, moldings and red fir floors survive. Local architects Scopes & Feustmann, themselves former patients, designed it in 1915, and the stonework is attributed to Pietro Tanzini. Contractor John J. O'Connell built it as an investment and sold it in 1916. Early occupants included a Canadian composer who died of tuberculosis in 1917, and later tenants likely included other patients. It is listed as a well-preserved example of Saranac Lake cure cottage design.","period_of_significance":"ca.1916 - 1940","architect_builder":"Scopes & Feustmann (architects); cobblestone masonry attributed to Pietro Tanzini","architectural_style":"Bungalow/Craftsman","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single dwelling; the form says the building retains a high degree of architectural integrity and its interior detailing is in excellent condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.734903-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001426.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001426/58f9a4cdaa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001426/58f9a4cdaa-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Morgan_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Morgan_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"92001473","name":"Cottage Row Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/cottage-row-historic-district-92001473/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312910","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morgan_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6911613"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/essex-county/morgan-cottage-92001426/"}
