Its original two-story sleeping porch, divided on the upper level, shows it was built as a private commercial sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. It also retains a high degree of integrity of design, materials and setting.","narrative":"Located on a pie-shaped lot in Saranac Lake's French Hill neighborhood, this two-and-one-half story shingled frame house was built around 1915 as a cure cottage for tuberculosis patients. It has a cross gable roof, a brick and concrete foundation, and Colonial Revival detailing. Its most notable feature is the two-story cure porch on the Neil Street front, with Doric columns below and paired sliding panels enclosing both levels. The upper porch is divided in half by a partition, a layout typical of commercial cottages that advertised private sleeping porches. Inside, the original stairway, pocket doors, butler's pantry, hardwood floors and green-stained pine woodwork remain. George Feisthamel occupied the house in 1915, and Sam and Mary Edelberg lived there from 1920 to 1940, though they reportedly never ran it as a cure cottage. The house is valued as a well-preserved example of Saranac Lake's health-resort architecture, with strong integrity of setting, materials and design.","period_of_significance":"c.1915-c.1930","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th & 20th Century Revivals: Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling; the original two-story cure porch and many interior features survive.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.696388-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001420.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001420/5cfd2f4cab-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001420/5cfd2f4cab-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Feisthamel-Edelberg_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Feisthamel-Edelberg_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001451","name":"New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-central-railroad-adirondack-division-historic-district-93001451/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312997","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feisthamel-Edelberg_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5441580"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/franklin-county/feisthamel-edelberg-cottage-92001420/"}
