It served as a boarding house type cure cottage.","why_significant":"The house is considered architecturally significant as a boarding house type cure cottage from the first growth period of Saranac Lake's tuberculosis cure industry (1888-1918). It is an excellent example of a small boarding house that took in one or two tubercular patients, and its octagonal glass-enclosed cure porch is an unusual feature. It retains a high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Perched on a steep hillside above the south shore of Lake Flower in Saranac Lake, this small gambrel-roofed Colonial Revival house at 3 Maple Hill dates from about 1890. It is a square, two-story frame building with clapboard siding on the first floor, shingles above, and a stone and concrete foundation. Its most striking features are a large octagonal glass-enclosed porch on the northeast corner and a veranda across the north facade, both with original ornamental detail and nine-pane casement windows. These date from the era when the village was a center for treating tuberculosis. The house operated as a boarding house type cure cottage, a small establishment that rented rooms to one or two patients, and was listed as such by the T.B. Society in 1915. It is regarded as an excellent example of that type, built during the industry's first boom period, and it retains a high degree of integrity. A modern rear porch is the main later addition.","period_of_significance":"ca.1890-ca.1940","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th & 20th Century Revivals: Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; a modern 12 by 18-foot porch has been added to the rear.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.736759-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001418.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001418/35a222faaf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001418/35a222faaf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Homestead,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Homestead,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001451","name":"New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-central-railroad-adirondack-division-historic-district-93001451/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313003","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Homestead_(Saranac_Lake,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7740097"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/franklin-county/homestead-the-92001418/"}
