It was used as a boarding house type cure cottage and is now a single-family home.","why_significant":"It is presented as an excellent example of a boarding house type private sanitarium from Saranac Lake's second growth period in the tuberculosis cure industry (1918-1939). It keeps its cure porches, veranda and call bell evidence, and it served World War I veterans under a Veterans' Administration contract. It also remains largely intact in its setting and design.","narrative":"Built in 1910 by a Mr. Buck at 3 Kiwassa Road in Saranac Lake, this two-and-one-half-story vernacular Queen Anne house began as a boarding house type cure cottage for tuberculosis patients. It sits on a coursed rubble stone foundation, with clapboard on the lower floors, cedar shingles in the gables, hip-roofed dormers and a full-width front veranda. Inside, a simple plan places a large room in each corner around a central stair. Numbered plates remain on second-floor doors, and two cure porches survive with beaded board walls, sloping painted floors and evidence of a call bell system. From 1923 to 1928 Mrs. Dorothy Witherspoon operated it as a registered private sanitarium, holding a Veterans' Administration contract to care for World War I veterans. Its cure features and high degree of integrity make it a representative example of the village's cure cottages. It is now a single-family home.","period_of_significance":"1910-c.1940","architect_builder":"Mr. Buck","architectural_style":"Late 19th & 20th Century Revivals: Queen Anne (vernacular Queen Anne)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Presently used as a single-family house; originally a boarding house type cure cottage, described as virtually intact from its period of construction.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.747473-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92001415.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001415/b7efd281a6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001415/b7efd281a6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Witherspoon_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Witherspoon_Cottage,_Saranac_Lake,_NY.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001451","name":"New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-central-railroad-adirondack-division-historic-district-93001451/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313026","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witherspoon_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8028172"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/franklin-county/witherspoon-cottage-92001415/"}
