The house was built about 1845 for Samuel Darden; the builder is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is a fine example of the Early Classical Revival style, with a central pedimented portico, original mantels and grained wainscoting, and it also shows the I-house form common in the Georgia Piedmont. It is significant in agriculture as the main house of a cotton farm that survives with two historic barns. It also represents the westernmost migration of Georgia settlement after the 1827 Land Lottery.","narrative":"Champinole is a rural plantation house about four miles northeast of Greenville, Meriwether County, Georgia. Samuel Darden built it around 1845, and a date of 1845 is marked on a chimney. The wood-frame house has a temple-form front with a central pedimented portico, four Doric columns, sidelights beside the doors, and a central hall with two rooms on each side. Inside, heart pine walls and floors, original mantels and grained wainscoting survive. Two heavy-timber barns remain from the working farm, which sits among rolling hills and a pecan grove. The property reflects the settlement of western Georgia after the 1827 Land Lottery and a small cotton farm of the antebellum period. Later owners included the Lovett family, Dr. John Pinkston's family, and tenant farmers Arthur and Sweet Render, who lived there for about fifty years before 1969. The Keith family then restored the house, adding a sunroom, kitchen, den and replacement columns, and it remains a home.","period_of_significance":"1845-1942","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Early Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling with agricultural outbuildings; restored beginning in 1969 by the Keith family.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.619505-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/92001400.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001400/21b8085d4c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001400/21b8085d4c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Saverivers","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Champinole;_Greenville,_GA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Saverivers</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Champinole;_Greenville,_GA.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208953","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134391665"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/meriwether-county/champinole-92001400/"}
