It hosted music lessons, square dances, cakewalks and applebutter making from 1937 into the early 1950s, and has been used again for traditional mountain music, dance and crafts since 1977.","narrative":"Country Cabin is a rustic log building of about 1937 in a mountain hollow beside the Powell River, near Josephine outside Norton, Virginia. Local young men built it from chestnut logs felled on nearby Williams Mountain, with funding from local government under the Works Progress Administration. It measures twenty by forty feet, has a stone fireplace, chestnut beams, a log porch and an open interior, and has changed little since construction. A kitchen extension was removed around 1952 for road expansion. Katherine O'Neil Peters Sturgill, a local folk singer, organized music lessons, square dances, box suppers and cakewalks there, and banjo player Dock Boggs sometimes played. Interest faded after World War II, and the cabin became a rental home. Community members revived it as a gathering place in 1977, and in 1988 it passed to Appalachian Traditions, Inc., a non-profit. It is listed for its long role in preserving Appalachian music, dance and craft traditions.","period_of_significance":"1937-1942","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: Log cabin","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Used since 1977 as a community center for Appalachian music, dance and crafts programs; reconstruction of the rear kitchen was in progress.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.326252-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/4/6842/41684204/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/92001395.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001395/f0665604fa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001395/f0665604fa-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Betcantrell","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Country_Cabin.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Betcantrell</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Country_Cabin.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41684204","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country_Cabin","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15211821"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/wise-county/country-cabin-92001395/"}
