It is also described as a rare fragment of roadside architecture along Route 29 and the last operating diner in Fairfax City.","narrative":"Located on Lee Highway in the City of Fairfax, this small roadside restaurant is a streamline Moderne diner built in a factory in Singac, New Jersey, by the Mountain View Diner Company. It was trucked to Virginia and arrived on July 20, 1947, when Route 29 ran through largely rural countryside. A rear kitchen addition was built on site. The prefabricated section has a steel frame covered in stainless steel, curved glass brick corners set above polished stainless prows, blue porcelain enamel panels, and red and green neon. Inside are ceramic tile, formica, marble counter and tables, terrazzo floors, six booths and twenty-four stools. A 1940s neon sign advertising air conditioning forms part of the ensemble. The diner was recognized for its architecture because few streamlined diners of its quality survive, and it is still in operation as a restaurant amid dense commercial development.","period_of_significance":"1947","architect_builder":"Mountain View Diner Company","architectural_style":"Moderne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still operating as a restaurant; described as the last operating diner in Fairfax City, surrounded by intense commercial development.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.716611-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/59/6805/41680559/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/92001370.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001370/03774e8cd8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001370/03774e8cd8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Handy","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:29_Diner_Exterior.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Handy</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:29_Diner_Exterior.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680559","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/29_Diner","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14711947"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/fairfax/29-diner-92001370/"}
