It is a rare surviving early brick dwelling in the area, and unusual for its semi-rural setting near the center of Tazewell. It was also the home of a prosperous merchant and industrialist connected by marriage to the prominent Peery family.","narrative":"Built of brick around 1828 for James Wynn, this two-story, three-bay house sits just off Main Street in Tazewell, Virginia. It has a central-passage plan, Flemish bond on the front facade, a molded brick cornice, and unusual cross-shaped vents in the gable walls. A rear ell was added in stages, with its second floor dating to the late nineteenth century. Later owners changed the house in several periods, including porch work, new flooring and bathrooms in the 1920s, and a painted exterior and new entry surround in the 1960s. Inside, early paneled wainscoting, a stair with delicate brackets, and a Federal mantel survive. Wynn was a merchant and tanyard operator married to a daughter of early settler William Peery. Later occupants included a physician, Dr. J. Henry Crockett, and state senator and coal operator John Newton Harman. The house was listed for its architecture, as a rare early brick dwelling in the area.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1828-1930","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the porch was rebuilt and a rear addition constructed by recent owners, and a servant's house was rehabilitated as a guest house.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:01.058-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/6839/41683942/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/92001368.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001368/e9cd4352af-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001368/e9cd4352af-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_Wynn_House_front.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_Wynn_House_front.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683942","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Wynn_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15229277"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/tazewell-county/wynn-james-house-92001368/"}
