Its builder is not named in the form's architect field, though R. R. Farr contracted to supply the brick and construct it.","why_significant":"The school reflects the growth of Virginia's public free school system after 1870 and the development of education in the Fairfax area. Both sections were unusually substantial for their time and represent two phases of school design. Together with its site, the building keeps late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century characteristics that are increasingly rare in northern Virginia.","narrative":"Located on Main Street in Fairfax, Virginia, this two-story brick schoolhouse was built in two stages. The original 24 by 40 foot section went up in 1873, with a gabled front, central entrance and six-over-six windows. A hip-roofed addition of 1912 was placed in front of it, in plain Classical Revival style with Italianate touches and a portico with fluted Doric columns. In 1873, most Virginia rural schools were small frame one-room buildings, so this brick school was unusually large and costly; a local newspaper criticized its expense. It was built after the state created a uniform public school system in 1870. The addition doubled the capacity as the community grew. A fire in 1930 damaged the east end. Later uses included an elementary school annex, special education classes, school board offices and a police academy. It has been vacant since the late 1970s. It retains high exterior integrity and an elevated site with mature oaks.","period_of_significance":"1873-c. 1925","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate; Late 19th and 20th century revivals: Classical Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Vacant since the late 1970s; local interest in rehabilitating it as a museum.
