Putman on a knoll that was part of the original Gabriel Putman farm.","why_significant":"It is significant for its association with Walter Putman, a prominent local businessman, attorney and banker who was Wilmot's second mayor. It is also Wilmot's best and only example of Queen Anne architecture within the village limits, with a high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1886 on a knoll at the west edge of Wilmot, Ohio, this 2½-story Queen Anne house has an irregular plan, brick walls on a dressed sandstone foundation, and a steeply pitched hipped slate roof with gables on all four sides. A stone panel on the east facade carries the name W.S. Putman and the date 1886. A wrap-around porch with turned posts, a cutaway bay with corner brackets and a projecting west bay break up the wall surfaces. Inside, the ornate staircase, pocket doors, walnut door and window surrounds, and cherry and chestnut dining room survive. Walter Putman, grandson of one of Wilmot's founders, lived here until his death in 1915. He ran the family foundry, practiced law, helped organize the Farmers State Bank, operated a mill and started another bank in Navarre. The house reflects his standing in the village and is the only Queen Anne house within Wilmot's limits.","period_of_significance":"1886-1915","architect_builder":"Unknown (architect/builder); Putman, Walter S. is listed as significant person","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Historic and current function is a single-family dwelling; the interior is described as essentially intact and no original outbuildings survive.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.015055-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/92001247.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001247/ed8f55293a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001247/ed8f55293a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walter_S._Putman_House_(Wilmot,_OH).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walter_S._Putman_House_(Wilmot,_OH).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991418","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138687339"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/stark-county/putman-walter-s-house-92001247/"}
